Sustainable Agriculture

The first aspect of this project is researching various agricultural practices and their role on a global scale. The three main practices studied are conventional, organic and genetically modified foods (GMOs). Conventional agriculture has been practiced for 50 years, since the industrial revolution. This method includes monoculture cropping, and pesticide use which leads to mass production. Organic farming is a holistic approach to agriculture in which you work in harmony with Earth's natural systems striving to continue to replenish the natural resources. Alternative agriculture is a product of new technology producing genetically selective produce (GE foods) as well as growing produce in hydroponic greenhouses. All practices pose negative and positive effects that will have an impact on the future of our earth.
After we become more aware of these issues through in-depth research, we are given a side and have to debate over which one would sustainably be able to feed the world. The classes are divided up into two debates per class (of two classes), and there are three sides arguing for each debate. Over the course of the project, students develop skills in researching and working as a group to produce a well rounded and supportable argument.
Following the debate, we decided that the holistic approach of organic agriculture should be the primary agricultural practice throughout the world. To gain the experience of producing an organic garden we decided to build one within our school. We planted three beds, full of vegetables, herbs and flowers. The food that we produce will be given to homeless shelters and also as a fund raiser. This is just one step closer to obtaining our goal, which is to Better the World (BTW).
