THE PICTURE GALLERY
pictures and photographs of fashion from 1920-1990

1920
This corset was worn in the 1920's, when women dared to be different by cutting their hair and wearing skirts that fell to the knees. A boyish, waif-like figure was 'all the rage' in the 20's. To achieve this flat look, women wore corsets like these that hooked onto the garter belt, there by binding the breasts down against the rib cage.

A couple dressed in evening attire. The woman is wearing a dress that stops at the knees and has no waist to accentuate her boyish figure. This fashion statement was called the 'Flapper'. As you can see, mans fashion has not changed much through the decades.

1930

When the 30's arrived, women's hair grew a little longer but still had the same carefree style. Curls, especially those around the face and on the forehead, were very popular back then..

This woman is wearing a balloon sleeved dress with a tiny cinched waist. Small skirts with slits up the side or back were very fashionable.

This is a purple velvet evening dress, with a typical scoop neck, flowing short sleeves and pleats from the shoulders down.

1940

This hat was very fashionable in the 40's. Feathers and veils were very popular.

This is a pink lace summer dress of the 40's. Notice the wearer of the dress was required to wear a slip or light colored dress underneath

This dress was a summer evening dress. Chiffon was a popular fabric, used for making delicate folds to drape vertically in the fashionable way of the 40's. Notice the deep V of the back line and the absence of the cinched waist.

1950

This red dress is made of chiffon, which gives it a floating look.

This yellow dress, probably made of taffeta, was worn with a crinoline skirt beneath it to make it fluff out.

These shoes were fashionable in the late 50's. Notice the sparkley decorations around the end of the shoes

1960

This was a common fashion in the late 60's. As you can tell, the wild patterns and bright colors from the late 60's, were carried into the 70's.

This raw silk and linen cream evening dress from the late 60's shows us the kid-like influence on the fashion world back then.

This dress from the early 60's shows us the love of silk and patterns, as well as flared sleeves.

1970

This was a common evening gown of the 70's. Note the chiffon used again to create folds in the dress, giving it a Greek toga type look.

This patchwork denim men's shirt was very fashionable because the patterns in the clothes of the 70's began to grow wilder with bright colors.

Another button up shirt from the 70's shows us the love of patterns in their wardrobe, although this shirt isn't as eccentric as others.

1980

This woman's gold lame jacket was popular in the 80's as shiny colored material like acrylic and lycra came into fashion.

This men's jacket from the early 80's shows the transformation from 70's bright colors into the neon of the 80's. Notice the bright blue swatches in the jacket.

This girl from the late 80's is wearing overalls that became popular and that were frequently worn with one or two straps undone, with the bib hanging down in front.

1990's

These two woman in evening dresses, demonstrate the love for dramatic colors, and influence from the early 20th century (right); and the sleek black and white combination with influence from the 30's and 40's (left).

This dress, like most fashion in the 90's, is inspired by the early 20's and 30's as we can see from the full flared skirt and sleeved bodice. Notice the material of the dress, a soft satin that reflects light slightly.

This man is wearing a formal tuxedo and, as we can see, the tuxedo has been left basically untouched through out the decades except for a few color and style modifications.
